Analysis of an argument – Hope in Life

‘Hope’- is it needed in a pre-destined world? Where their constant busting makes us realize the pain of humiliation felt due to helplessness. I could have lived happily sans ‘hope’!!!

The above was said by a dear friend of mine. I am going to use this as a practice for my GMAT exam :) . The A.W.A (Analytical Writing Assessment) has a part called – Analysis of an argument. Not that I’ve been preparing that hard, but just that I am in a mood to write on this.

So here it goes...

The argument is made with the assumption that life is indeed decided beforehand. That nothing within our reach will help us change our fortune or tread a path of our choice. This is akin to visualizing life in a state of pure helplessness where in we are left with no option but to live our course as has been prescribed by forces beyond. It then goes on to assert that in such a situation, when we make plans or have hopes which are not in line with our destiny, we end up inflicting on ourselves, utmost agony and pain.

Firstly, the argument denies the power of hope. In one stroke, it demolishes zillions of dreams and aspirations. For is it not hope that help realize these dreams and aspirations. Every inventions, every attained achievement was based on the hope to see a change. Every war and every disaster was only seen through with the hope of possibility. It is only hope that makes us march for a better tomorrow.

Now in the process, we could always fail. Things need not always work out as planned. But that should not deter us from marching forward in life. Whenever we face failures, whenever we are struck with calamities, it is obviously against our wishes; but that is no reason for us to cover ourselves in constant ignominy. We are not the masters of the world, but we surely are the masters of our mind. It is during such times, that we should display our strength of courage. The assumption that we hold no control over ourselves is a cruel blow on the strength of character shown by leaders of yore and present. They have, through their lives shown us how to stay calm and face adversities. It was only their failures that lifted them up. And it was their hope that helped them stay afloat. They are all testimony to the fact that we can, by determination and hard work, decide our life and the path it should traverse.

Lastly, to say that happiness can be achieved by shedding hope is a refusal to accept reality. That life is always not a bed of roses is known to all of us. Happiness and sadness are a state of mind left for us to decide, not a decision that should be forced upon us. Tough times do come, but they will definitely pass like waves over the sea.

To my readers - As always, I eagerly look forward to your comments. :)

In my opinion, life becomes meaningless if hope is lost. It is hope which stops a person from killing himself/herself. Thus, hope is another name for faith or trust. Those who believe in God, always hope for deliverance. And, hope is not the same as greed.

Best wishes :)

Agreed, agreeing with each and every single word!!! but the line of thought this analysis promotes is definitely for the people with big heart, for the people who after nth failure still slog it out for one success and, such people have been our great leaders. but not for weak hearted ones. remember the RDB line "jindagi jeene ke do hi tareke hote ek jo ho raha usse hone do aur nahi toh khade ho ker usse badalo" and such people fall the first category. a single dejection can shatter them and they end up cutting short their life. and i wrote that category... what say!!!

@Ayesha
Very true indeed... It is hope that sustains life :)

@Mukul
I still don't agree.You could live the first way and still have hope. But to cease life when hope shatters is cowardice. Which is not to be confused with indifference which is what I believe the first category whom you are referring would fall under...

Doooode.. Nice analysis.. :) "Hope"- this should be the last thing ever lost.

And this can be never validated..whether "Life is Pre-destined or Not Pre-destined" :)

God created us.. Gave us the power to make choices.. When you make good choices and carry hope with you all through your journey in life, you can be more happy. So make "Hope" you best friend. Never leave her :)

@Lakshmi
One should never leave hope :)

still i would say thats indifference combined with no hope

Well... in the context I think it is important that you should have hope. But like the old saying goes... 'too much of anything is a bad thing'.
It is important to understand that hope is a state of the soul. It should enable you to do things.. and it should not cloud your judgment. There needs to be a balanced, practical approach. What do u say?

@Mukul
We'll agree to disagree :)

@Aj
Very true... There needs to be a balanced practical approach. What I meant so say was the to banish hope is not the way to go about things...

Agree with AJai...i guess balance is what we all need...not single minded optimism, nor downright pessimism...

@Musthafa
Yep... A balanced approach based on hope :)

Issam I believe that in a way hope gives us another day to live, coz its hope that keeps us going.Whatever happens in life, the hope that things wud b on track soon makes us look forward..life without hope is a dead end.
Thanks for a thought provoking post :) take care!

Hi:)

First time on your blog and it was a very deep thought provoking post.

But I would like to disagree with you on few occasions. If we have already assumed that everything is being pre-destined and nothing we could change, then the hope of 'Hope' gets buried then and there itself.

The point that you are making about hope,aspirations,dreams all exist because we hope for something, which inherently means we are assuming NOT everything is already decided, may be there are something fixed, but still something could be changed.

And finally, I agree life is not bed of roses and happiness & miseries go hand in hand. But it becomes more painful, when we are already down, we try our best to stand up and we fall again and it becomes the worst when we run out of ideas as how to stand up next. On the contrary, if i knew either i will get better or remain same or becomes worse depending upon my destiny,I would rather not try anything, the failure will not hurt me that much then..

Sorry for the long comment :(
